Profile on Historic Downtown Los Angeles
Retail Businesses

Bordered by 3rd and 9th and Hill and Main Streets, Historic Downtown Los Angeles is comprised of an unparalleled collection of stunning Beaux Arts, Art Deco, and revival-style buildings that have been reborn into studio lofts and condos with ground floor restaurants, cafes, and retail boutiques.

Historic Downtown is the heart of Los Angeles, a lively marketplace, and a crossroads for all Angelenos.

In the early 1900s, Historic Downtown was the destination commercial district for the LA region. Today, its historic buildings offer breathtakingly beautiful and unique spaces for mixed-use development. Creative businesses provide the perfect complement to upstairs live/work lofts, while new shops, galleries, cafes and nightclubs line the landscape of the city’s historic core.

As Downtown experiences an explosive demand for new shops, services, and entertainment, the growing residential community and the strong Downtown office market ensure a healthy customer base for new and existing businesses. Opportunities still abound in Historic Downtown, setting the stage for the rediscovery of Los Angeles’ most diverse and vibrant retail district.

Historic Downtown Districts infused with today’s energy

Broadway Theater and Entertainment District
In the heart of Historic Downtown is Broadway, which served as Los Angeles’ center for theater, vaudeville and cinema during the first half of the 20th century. Today, Broadway remains the nation’s largest and most dense historic theater district, with the Orpheum fully restored and other theaters in various stages of restoration and reuse. With the designation of an entertainment zone along Broadway, a renewed nightlife is being stimulated in tandem with a revitalized shopping district.

Old Bank District
A majority of Downtown LA’s new loft residences are located along Spring and Main Streets in Historic Downtown. A portion of Historic Downtown has been dubbed “the Old Bank District,” having served as the premier location for Los Angeles’ first banks and brokerage firms. Early 1900s architectural masterpieces that were built as monuments to the personal fortunes of Los Angeles’ business barons are now fully restored and converted into loft apartments with clusters of new shops and restaurants on the ground floor.

Gallery Row
A portion of Spring and Main Streets in Historic Downtown has been designated by the LA City Council as Gallery Row. A number of Downtown LA artists and artisans formed the Gallery Row organization, a grass-roots effort that has successfully lured more than a dozen new galleries to Historic Downtown since the Row’s inception in 2003. Evening and weekend art exhibits and a monthly Downtown Art Walk bring many visitors to enjoy the Downtown art scene.
